What is 3D printing?

3D printing is a manufacturing process that builds objects layer by layer from a digital model. Common consumer methods include FDM (melting filament) and resin printing (curing liquid resin with UV light).

An STL file is the standard format for 3D printing. It represents the outer surface of a model using triangles. STL files do not contain color, texture, or internal details—only shape.

STL files are simple, lightweight, and compatible with all major slicers and printers. Their universal support makes them the default format for printing.

OBJ (supports color), 3MF (modern and compact), and STEP/IGES (engineering formats) are also used. STL remains the most common for printing.

Load the STL into a slicer. The slicer sets layer height, supports, infill, orientation, and generates G‑code for the printer.
